Review: The Magician’s Nephew

Where do you begin reviewing what is probably your favorite book? Well to start, this time around I was able to read through it with some new perspective. I’ve really been getting into doing audiobooks more often because of the time that I end up spending in a vehicle for work. This has been really beneficial to me and has given me a chance to read through books while driving down the street.

What made this time even more special was that I listened to it with my oldest daughter. Each Tuesday and Thursday throughout the school year, her and I would get time together. I would take her to school and I would pick her up from school. When 2022 came around, it was time for a change in our travels. I decided that it would be a good time to start listening to the Chronicles of Narnia. We first listened to The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. We started there because there is a movie for it.

We sort of back tracked though to The Magician’s Nephew. No new movie for this one and it is my favorite fiction book of all-time. I was nervous. You ever show someone a show or movie that you love and you are convinced they will love too, but they end up hating it or trashing it? This was my fear as we set out on an adventure with Digory and Polly.

Needless to say, she loved it. She was engaged and followed the story well. She fears the White Witch, so when she comes into the story, my daughter sat up and listened so closely. She loved hearing about Aslan and how he created the world that she loves called Narnia. She loved all the talking animals and hearing about all of their differing personalities.

I had nothing to fear. This came as such a relief to me. What was really encouraging to me was how she looked forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays because she knew that was the time she got with me listening to our books. You would be surprised how much of the story she is understanding and is connecting with Biblical truth as we dive into these books.

So far, we are four books out of seven. We’ve done two books with movies and two books without movies and truthfully, she’s done a little better with the books without movies because it has caused her to use her beautiful imagination to dream up what the story would look like. Its been fun and listening to this series is something that I would highly recommend.
